Would you agree with me that technology has changed HR Practices? Technology has changed the business world many times over. With the advent of computers and the internet, business processes have become increasingly dependent on the use of computer technology. This impact is seen in nearly all areas of business areas, including human resources (HR), where technology continues to have a significant impact. We will consider some functions in HR.
Recruiting
Recruitment has been significantly impacted by technology. Before the Internet, HR recruiters had to rely on print publications, such as newspapers, to post jobs and get prospects for open positions. They could not post a job vacancy in one or more locations and have millions of people see it all at once. With technology, that is now possible and recruiters are more effective. LinkedIN might be every recruiters favorite social network because it enables you to not only post vacancies but allows them head hunt individuals that match current organization requirements.
Training is no longer a luxury for only the rich medium and large sized organizations. Technology makes it possible for HR professionals to train staff more efficiently. For new hires as an example, company information and training programs can be accessed directly from computers without the physical need of trainers. Technology also aids training in virtual classrooms where HR professionals train a large number of employees quickly and are able to assess their progress through computerized testing programs. Additionally, online courses exist and this saves organizations the cost of sending employees to the physical training centers to acquire the same knowledge they can gain online at their own pace. ()
Data Storage and Retrieval
HR professionals generally deal with employee records and have to keep much of paperwork on a file for considerable period of time. The use of electronic imaging has made it possible for companies to store and retrieve files in an electronic format. Technology also makes it possible for HR professionals to simply print the forms that are needed for employees. Printing on demand eliminates the need to dig through an endless number of files in the file cabinet to find what is needed.
Enhanced performance management is another byproduct of technological improvement. HR professionals can use computer technology to assess employee performance and also obtain employee feedback to be used for a better organization. Various software programs make it possible for HR professionals to examine employee performance using various metrics to ensure that employees are meeting performance standards. Employees that don’t measure up can be subjected to additional training.
